Dec 26, 2014-Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) has said it plans to resume services on the Kathmandu-Delhi sector in mid-March with at least two flights daily.
Industry watchers expect airfares to drop with the national flag carrier flying the Delhi route once again. Ticket prices have swelled three-fold since troubled NAC went offline creating a bonanza for competing carriers.
NAC said its new Airbus A320-200, which is in the final stages of completion, would be flown on the Kathmandu-Delhi sector first. The carrier recently issued a notice to appoint general sales agents (GSA) in Delhi.
Similarly, NAC said that the frequency on the Kathmandu-Kuala Lumpur sector would be doubled to 14 flights weekly as soon as the new planes arrive. NAC has ordered two new Airbus A320 jets, and the first one is expected to arrive in Nepal by February. It currently serves the international sector with two ageing Boeing 757s.
“We have accorded high priority to the Delhi sector as travel demand has increased tremendously. That’s why we have planned to operate two flights a day on this sector,” said Madan Kharel, managing director of NAC. “We have also planned to resume flights on the Kathmandu-Bangalore sector after a long break.”
Travel agencies said airline ticket prices increased dramatically immediately after NAC suspended its operations on the sector. A one-way ticket on the Kathmandu-Delhi sector that costs Rs 12,000 to Rs 13,000 was priced at Rs 40,000 during the September-November peak season. Ticket prices of budget carriers jumped to around Rs 30,000 from the normal Rs 12,000.
Currently, four Indian carriers, Jet Airways, Air India, Spice Jet and IndiGo, operate 60 flights weekly on the Kathmandu-Delhi sector. These four airlines commanded a 26.67 percent market share of 1.722 million passengers in the first six months of 2014, said Tribhuvan International Airport.
Last year, NAC formally ceased its Kathmandu-Delhi services due to lack of planes. On March 14, 2013, NAC headquarters in Kathmandu notified its regional office in India of its decision to suspend its Delhi operations.
Meanwhile, Kharel said that NAC would station only two employees in Delhi for monitoring work after a GSA had been appointed. Before the suspension of the Delhi flights, NAC had 85 employees at its Delhi office with their salaries and perks resulting in a massive drain on its resources. “As there won’t be a big financial burden on the sector, NAC should be able to offer a one-way ticket for Rs 12,000,” Kharel said.
Meanwhile, NAC’s plan to add seven flights weekly to its Kathmandu-Kuala Lumpur service is also expected to push down airfares. Kuala Lumpur is served by NAC, Malaysia Airlines and low-cost carrier Air Asia. In addition, another low-cost airline Malindo Air is slated to begin flights in February.
Appointment of NAC board members stayed
The Supreme Court has issued a stay order against the Tourism Ministry’s decision to appoint a new board of directors at NAC.
On December 5, Tourism Minister Deepak Chandra Amatya had removed Ashok Chandra Pokharel, Amar Narayan Mali and Tek Nath Acharya representing the private sector from the NAC board and appointed Pabitra Kumar Karki, Nima Nuru Sherpa and Mukti Ram Pandey in their place.
Subsequently, two of the ousted members filed a writ at the court stating that their tenure had not expired.
Mar 6, 2016- Himalaya Airlines, a Nepal-China joint-venture company, is all set to launch its international operations with an Airbus A320 jetliner.
The carrier’s first aircraft is scheduled to land at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) on March 9. The airline, which has dry leased the jet, said another Airbus A319 will join its fleet soon.
A team from the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal is currently in China to inspect the aircraft and complete necessary documentation.
“We will conduct test flights on a number of destinations before putting the aircraft into commercial operation,” said Vijay Shrestha, vice president—administration at Himalaya Airlines.
The airline said it would start commercial operations by March-end.
Shrestha said the company would conduct its flight on the Kathmandu-Delhi route, subject to approval by the Indian airport authority. “After Delhi, we will be expand to Doha, Kuala Lumpur, China and other sectors.”
Himalaya will be the sixth airline to operate on the Kathmandu-Delhi sector after Nepal Airlines, Jet Airways, Air India, Druk Air and IndiGo.
The entry of a new carrier is likely to result in a fare war as Himalaya plans to launch promotional offers on a number of routes.
“We don’t intend to go for a price war, but we will launch sales promotion to attract travellers, which all airlines do,” he said.
The airline has already opened advance booking on the Kathmandu-Doha sector through its general sales agent there.
It plans to launch the Kathmandu-Doha flights from April 12. Himalaya will be the second carrier to connect Doha from Nepal after Qatar Airways.
The airlines had previously planned to launch scheduled flights from October 2014, but the plan was deferred due to “some technical problems”. It was further delayed by the devastating April 25 earthquake.
The company plans to link various Asian and Middle East cities initially. It also plans to acquire 15 Airbus aircraft, including long-haul wide-body jets, to expand operations to Europe and other destinations in the next five years.
Initially, Himalaya had planned to operate Kathmandu-Lhasa flights to become the second international carrier linking directly to the administrative capital of Tibet after Air China, but the plan was changed given the A320 aircraft cannot land at Lhasa airport.
Himalayan Infrastructure Fund Aviation Investment and Yeti World Investment hold a 51 percent stake in the company, while Tibet Airlines owns 49 percent.
The company has a paid-up capital of $25 million. It is the biggest foreign direct investment (FDI) from China in Nepal’s aviation sector.
Recently, the airline signed a long-term service agreement with Sri Lankan Airline’s aviation integrated training academy, Sri Lankan Training, to receive A320 family simulator training for ab initio pilots and cabin crew.
Currently, 25 international and two Nepali airlines fly to 23 destinations in 13 countries from Nepal.
The country has signed air service agreements with 38 countries so far, the latest being New Zealand and Vietnam.
International passenger traffic through TIA dropped 6 percent to 2.66 million in the first 10 months of 2015, largely due to the April 25 earthquake and a shortage of aviation fuel resulting from India’s unofficial trade embargo against Nepal.
Kathmandu to Delhi flight
Greetings all,
What are peoples experiences with the flights from Delhi to KTM? I am landing in Delhi at midnight--flying from Amsterdam--and want to get an early flight into KTM.
What is the current preferred airline (on-time, safe, economical)?
Is booking online the same as booking at the airport (cost and actually having a reservation)?
When I Kayak the flight I get Spice Air and Indian Air as my top choices...around US $200-250...should I just book one of these and be done with it? In the past I always have flown RAC...but, I guess they are long gone.
Thanks again,
Nat
Nat,
US$200-250 is pretty expensive for Delhi to Kathmandu flight. If you are well informed about your plan to come to Kathmandu, you can get as cheap flight to Kathmandu as in US$85 through Indigo. They have comparatively good service in their standard. Booking in advance, as always, are cheaper than buying from the airport.
Happy travelling!
Krishna
Agreed, Indigo probably best choice.
Just be sure to avoid Airarabia (they have a bad relationship with KTM and cancel flights without refund or replacement)
Agreed with #2 about Airarabia. They don't have very good relationship with Kathmandu, I guess. One of my guy were supposed to arrive in Kathmandu 12:55PM from Sharjah to Kathmandu yesterday but he arrived at 4:45PM instead! I was standing at the airport almost four hours and didn't get any solid reason. I don't think they have Kathmandu -Delhi -Kathmandu flight though.
Hey Nat,
Yes, I would recommend Indigo, especially Booz I fly for them :)
They are on time and safe, and if you book now, you should get a good fare!
Cheers!
Krish
What about your luggage , do you have to buy a transit visa or something like that , i don,t think they will label your luggage in Amsterdam for Kathmandu when flying 2 different airlines
I have flown Spice Air on this route and found them to be a good low cost airline. You did not indicate if your $250 is one way or return but if it looks like they have return flights in March for $180 which I think is quite reasonable.
The $180-250 is a round trip cost...and that is the most expensive I have been quoted. I can book individual legs from $90-125.
I will check a large bag and am assuming I will need to go and get it...and then recheck the bag in Delhi for the 2 different airlines...I will have about 5-8 hours to do this while I wait in the airport. Should I expect many problems going from International to Local terminals?
I am actually starting in Portland, Or. KLM has a direct flight from Portland to Amsterdam and then one to Ams>>Delhi. I figure it is the cheapest/fastest way to go.
Cheers
Nat
et is fine as well, just make sure you have time to be late in which ever airline you choose. Delhi has had a revamp in the last couple of years and is much more efficient, but as you will not be booked through to KTM by KLM, you will have to get the bag yourself and re-check it. From past experience this is not so easy.
Beware the possibility of your bag going through to landside arrivals when you are stuck in the transit lounge. If this happens then you will have to 'enter' India and you need a visa for that and you cant get it on the spot, or at least Brits cannot. I would do some specific enquiries of KLM as to where the bag is going and how to get it back. If I remember from my arrival in Delhi last month, KTM is the same terminal as the other international flights. Rememeber its Nepal and therefore international. be careful you will be **ed with jetlag and not particularly alert!
Captainbruce,
You bring up a very interesting point. Yes, I will be in all international terminal flying into Ktm...but I did not think about my bag going out to a place where I need a Visa.
I guess I don't know if KLM will check my bag through to Ktm.
If KLM will not check my bag onto Indigo, do I need to 'Enter' India to get my bag...and then recheck it from Del to Ktm with Indigo. Thereby needing a Visa?
Thanks
Nat

Kathmandu to New Delhi flight on Air India
Jul 06, 2014, 6:57 PM
Hello everyone.
I would like to ask your opinion. I will be staying in Kathmandu on October 17-20. My Air India flight leaves Kathmandu airport on Monday, October 20 at 3.40pm for New Delhi, India.
Scheduled arrival in New Delhi is at 5pm. Then, at night on October 21 at 3.10am I have a flight for Amsterdam, which means I'd wait at the airport from 5pm till 3am (10hours) or so.
Is it safe to do so, or should I rebook my flight to New Delhi for a day earlier? Those are two separate tickets. Any advice will be appreciated! thank you!
10 hours should be enough in my opinion, if you want to be in safer conditions then just fly one day earlier. International flights are rarely cancelled and delays for only couple of hours if there is any delay. For me it's safe, if you are in doubt then fly one day earlier.
Another option will be flying to Delhi in the morning if you haven't purchased the Kathmandu - Delhi tickets, there are morning flights to Delhi from Kathmandu.
Well it should not be a problem at all as the weathers is lot better then n the other thing to consider is if you plan on taking a flight a day earlier you need to get the Indian visa as well so don't worry bout it...as for sightseeing you can do them all within your time frame.
The day you arrive depending upon your arrival time...you might want to visit Pashupatinath n Boudhanath...always best in the late afternoons...mt Everest flight is one thing you might not want to miss out so suggest the earliest flight the second day with the tours of medieval cities Bungamati,,,Khokana and Kirtipur ..the 3rd day do a sunrise tour from Nagarkot and enjoy your breakfast amidst the views of the langtang range from the rooftop restaurants around Nagarkot followed by a tour of bhaktapur Durbar square n back to kathmandu...walk along the streets of Thamel ...lad timi ute to buy souvenirs.

Apr 15, 2014-Fares on almost all the international carriers serving Kathmandu have taken off with hordes of travellers chasing scarce air seats. Airlines from the Gulf, India, China and Malaysia, in particular, have jacked up their ticket prices. What’s more, fares to Nepal from US and Europe have doubled.
According to travel agencies, it takes more than two to three days to book a seat on some sectors and travellers have to pay double. Tickets on the Kathmandu-Delhi sector were being sold for Rs 26,000 to Rs 30,000 on Friday compared to Rs 13,000 to Rs 14,000 a month ago. “If you want to fly to Delhi within two to three days, you have to shell out Rs 35,000 to Rs 40,000 to get a ticket,” said a travel agent. Low-cost carriers (LCCs) like Spice Jet and IndiGo have been charging up to Rs 16,000 to Rs 18,000 for a one-way ticket, up from Rs 10,000 a month ago.
“Almost all the seats on Indian carriers are sold out until April-end on the Kathmandu-Delhi-Kathmandu sector,” said Deepak Basnet, ticket executive at Osho World Nepal.
Normally, on Indian sectors, tickets cost Rs 15,000 if airlines have 70 percent seat bookings; and if occupancy exceeds 80 percent, prices jump to Rs 40,000.
What makes tickets on the Kathmandu-Delhi-Kathmandu sector expensive is the massive increase in traffic during the April-May period, the busiest tourism season in Nepal when it receives hordes of summer vacationers from India. Travel agencies said tickets were in short supply as these days most Nepali migrant workers were opting to travel to their job destinations via Delhi. Around 45,000 Nepali migrant workers leave for the various labour destinations monthly with an equal number of returnees flying in the opposite direction.
According to travel trade entrepreneurs, as Jet Airways was not able to cater to increased demand on its Kathmandu-Delhi flights, it raised the frequency to two flights daily on the Kathmandu-Mumbai sector.
Another busy sector is the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) where airlines have jacked up ticket prices by 50-60 percent. A one-way ticket on Nepal Airlines for the Kathmandu-Doha sector costs Rs 35,000.
Tickets on Qatar Airways and Etihad Airways cost Rs 40,000 and Rs 42,000 respectively. In normal times, the airfare on the sector is Rs 22,000 to Rs 25,000. LCCs like Fly Dubai and Air Arabia are charging Rs 32,000 on the sector, up from Rs 18,000 to Rs 20,000. However, ticket prices on the Doha-Kathmandu sector remains unchanged at Rs 22,000 due to low occupancy, travel agencies said.
“It’s a marketing policy of airlines.
If you book your ticket one or two months in advance, you will get the cheapest fare,” said Bharat Shrestha, president of the Airlines Operating Committee (AOC). “After the advance booking, travel demand prompts airlines to raise airfares.”
In addition, hikes in fuel prices and various taxes at Kathmandu’s airport are passed on to the passenger that makes airfares more expensive, Shrestha said, who is also an airport manager of Oman Air.
Airfares on the Kathmandu-Kuala Lumpur sector have soared 60-70 percent due to the onset of the peak tourist season and heavy movement of Nepali migrant workers. The sector is served by six airlines.
A one-way ticket on the Kathmandu-Kuala Lumpur flight costs Rs 30,600 on Nepal Airlines. Malaysia Airlines and LCC Air Asia charge Rs 35,000 and Rs 32,000 respectively. During normal times, a ticket costs Rs 18,000. Thai Airways, Biman Bangladesh and Jet Airways also link Kuala Lumpur via their respective countries.
With summer holidaymakers packing flights to Nepal, fares for inbound travellers from European and US destinations have doubled. As airlines connecting Nepal from the long-haul market segment are almost full, airfare has increased significantly, said Basnet.
Travel agencies reported that a ticket from New York to Kathmandu costs Rs 120,000 at present, up from Rs 65,000 a month ago. Likewise, the London-Kathmandu airfare has jumped to Rs 115,000 from Rs 55,000.
Airfares on the long-haul sector rises during the April-May and October-November periods which are Nepal’s two major tourist seasons. Fares from France and Germany have gone up to Rs 100,000 while fares on the Sydney-Kathmandu sector have remained unchanged at Rs 73,000.
Meanwhile, a surge in arrivals from China has induced Chinese carriers to hike fares by 50-60 percent. Airfares on the Kunming-Kathmandu flight have risen to Rs 38,000 from Rs 22,000. Similarly, fares on the Chengdu-Kathmandu flight have swelled to Rs 45,000 from Rs 30,000.
The Guangzhou-Kathmandu sector is the busiest sector at present with a one-way ticket costing Rs 60,000, up from the normal Rs 30,000. According to travel agencies, air seats on the flight are sold out until April. For May, ticket prices have been set at Rs 40,000.
